PAT Testing

Portable Appliance Testing or PAT Testing is a very important aspect of your health and safety policy. The PAT test involves electrical appliances being routinely checked with a PAT Tester for safety. The correct term for the whole process is In-service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment. The pat testing is used to determine whether the equipment is in a satisfactory condition.

By getting a PAT test you will be fulfilling your legal obligations under the various UK legislation that cover health and safety at work as well as regulations relating to the provision and use of electrical equipment at work. Some of these are:

Health & Safety at Work Act 1974,
Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999,
Electricity at Work Regulations 1989,
Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992
Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

Your insurance company may require you to have a Portable Appliance Test(PAT test) as a necessary condition of your insurance policy. Failure to carry out regular PAT Testing may be taken into account when arriving at a settlement figure if an incident occurs that is associated with an electrical appliance. ‘Electrical Equipment’ includes anything used, intended to be used or installed for use, to generate, provide, transmit, transform, rectify, convert, conduct, distribute, control, store, measure or use electrical energy.”
